St Michaels B&B is a restoration and refurbishment of a listed building in a small Cotswolds town. The listing has imposed several restrictions on the refurbishment and design of the building and has resulted in limitations for disabled users.
The B&B is located on Victoria Street which is an unlit road off New Street. The entrance to St Michaels is visible due to external lighting above the main door. Disabled parking is provided on the other side of the road directly in front of the main entrance.
Natural, even lighting is utilised in the building wherever possible to reduce the energy consumption, but is supported with artificial lighting where needed. Glazed doors have thick oak frames and are easily recognisable as such.
The main door to the building is manually operated and leads into the restaurant. The threshold into the restaurant on the ground floor is level with the main road and easily accessible to mobility impaired people. However, the public WC which serves the restaurant is of a restricted size, comfortable for ambulant disabled users however not large enough for a full wheelchair turning angle.
Part of the external terrace isn’t accessible to wheelchair users. It is accessible via the restaurant through a flight of internal stairs of 5 steps and a further 2 external steps. Part of the terrace can be accessed at the rear of the property by mobility impaired individuals. All internal staircases have an oak handrail for support. The stairs in the building do not have ‘corduroy’ hazard warning nosings with contrasting colours to guide visually impaired people.
None of the suites are accessible for wheelchair users. All accommodation is accessible via internal timber flights of stairs. There are 14 steps to the Indian room and to the Art-Deco room. There are 2 more steps to reach the Rococo room. There are additional 12 stairs to get to the first suite and a further 6 steps to get to the second suite. Suite 1 and two have sloped ceilings.
All of the bedrooms are carpeted. The plugs in the rooms are at low level. All TV’s are remote controlled.
All suites are equipped with a shower-room comprising of a walk in shower, basin and WC but are not suitable for wheelchair access. All showers have non-slip surfaces. A shower mat is available on request.
The beds are accessible on both sides for guests requiring assisted walking with a frame.
The various suites have been designed following different themes and because of the strong colour schemes some may be more suitable than others for users with visual impairment. For more information please contact the desk.
